What is the difference between a racked fence and a stepped fence, and which one do I need?

A racked fence follows the slope of the ground, with the rails angled to keep the pickets vertical and the fence face parallel to the slope. A stepped fence runs level in sections, with drops between them, like stairs. San Diego's canyon-rim and mesa lots often need stepped runs because the slope is too steep to rack safely, or the stepping looks better and costs less. We assess your lot and recommend which approach works best for your terrain and budget.

How deep do fence posts need to be set in concrete in San Diego?

Posts are typically set 30 inches deep in concrete, but San Diego's soil and slope matter. On a level lot with stable soil, 30 inches holds. On a slope or in sandy or clay soil that shifts with the wet winters and dry summers, we may go deeper or use more concrete. We set each post to hold against wind and frost heave, and we check the footing spec on your property during the on-site visit.

If you prefer wood, pressure-treated pine is more rot-resistant than cedar, but it will still age and may need maintenance over time.
